In Design: Hinny chair, Harriet Poppy Speed

Harriet Poppy Speed’s unique Hinny chair aims to increase interaction between adults and children, restoring the act of reading together.

Harriet studied for her Product Design A Level at Queen Elizabeth High School in Northumberland, and received a Distinction in a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, specialising in 3D Design, at Newcastle College.

She is currently studying on a Foundation Degree in Furniture Design & Making at Rycotewood Furniture Centre, with the intention of pursuing onto their BA Honours in Furniture Design & Making for her final year. Harriet also held internships with Morgan Contract Furniture and MADE.com last year.

Harriet runs an inclusive design blog – This Girl Makes – with an online community of over 100 members. Harriet hopes this is a project she can take further after she finish her studies.

“Hinny is an interactive chair that encourages children and adults to read together,” she says. “The chair aims to help revive libraries as a more playful space. The turned backrest is scalloped to provide comfortable support, and is wrapped in patterned reclaimed paper.

“The design explores the contrast between soft curves and angular shaping in a friendly, equine form.”
