Mobus Fabrics says it is leading the post-bromine movement with its new FR technology, PurePass.
With the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) officially identifying DBDPE (Decabromodiphenyl ethane) as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC), the furniture and upholstery industries are under growing pressure to replace traditional brominated flame-retardant (FR) compounds with safer, more sustainable alternatives, says Mobus, which has answered that call with PurePass, a next-generation, white bromine-free FR system developed to deliver BS 5852 compliance while improving the breathability, handle and aesthetics of upholstery fabrics.
Unlike traditional FR systems based on brominated compounds, PurePass uses mineral-based, inert, and odour-free chemistry, ensuring compliance with OEKO-TEX, REACH, and ZDHC standards. The technology is available in multiple forms, including direct coating, lamination, and PurePass+, to meet diverse manufacturing and performance needs.
Developed over the past five years, through close collaboration between Mobus UK, Mobus Sian, and Clarkson Coatings, PurePass benefits from mirrored finishing capabilities across the UK and China, ensuring consistent global quality and supply for furniture manufacturers worldwide.
PurePass is part of Mobus’ wider FR innovation portfolio, which also includes phosphorus-based and inherent fibre FR systems.
“At Mobus Fabrics, innovation means anticipating tomorrow’s challenges and delivering practical solutions today,” says sales director Sam Thornber. “We are prepared and ready to help guide our upholstery partners through this transitional process and new era of safer, more sustainable FR solutions.”
