A focus on the domestic flammability regulations is the fourth in a series of recorded training sessions developed by the Furniture Industry Research Association. The ‘Introduction to the domestic flammability regulations’ was developed by Howard James, operations manager - testing, at FIRA International, the service provider to the Furniture Industry Research Association).
The session covers: why the flammability regulations exist and what they cover; the requirements of the regulations; who is responsible for compliance; the tests – including ignition sources, schedules 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and watersoaking; and display labels.
James says: “There is no question that flammability generates the highest percentage of enquiries we receive. It is the most popular face-to-face training we host and has the most page views on our website. Therefore, it was an obvious choice to form part of the recorded training sessions we’ve developed for the Furniture Industry Research Association. There is some confusion which surrounds the regulations, and we’re aiming to demystify some aspects of the regulations through this training.
“Although there has been talk for some time about updating the regulations, which originally date back to 1988, the latest information we have from OPSS (Office for Product Safety and Standards) is that, due to Covid-19, any new regulations would not be ready until 2022 at the earliest. As such, the industry has to ensure they are compliant with the current regulations.”
