Manchester show celebrates industry talent

For the third year running the Manchester Furniture Show (MFS) will provide a platform for students from Burnley College to show their handmade pieces at the event, taking place from 14-16th July at Manchester Central.

On show will be chairs, screens, tables and writing desks crafted by students on vocational and adult learning courses, students studying for higher-level HNC and HND qualifications on university courses at Burnley College and those studying with Themis, the business training and apprenticeship arm of Burnley College.

Both full- and part-time students attend the courses on offer which include Furniture Design and Make, Production and Upholstery, plus apprenticeships in cabinet craft and upholstery. Those showing their work this year range from 16-72 years of age.

David Lord, head of construction and future technologies at Burnley College, which includes the School of Furniture, says: “The standard of woodwork and upholstery which will be on display is outstanding. Hours of dedicated work have gone into their creation of these stunning pieces of furniture which reflect the skill and passion of students and Themis apprentices alike.

"Our tutors and trainers have years of experience and industry knowledge behind them – they are true craftsmen and women, who take pride in their work and are committed to ensuring their skills and knowledge are passed on to new generations of master upholsterers and woodworkers.”

Subsequent to last year's show, two of the students who displayed their work in gained employment with exhibitors at the show. The work from the students of Burnley College will on display in the Main Hall on stand A75 this year.
