Strong start to the week for John Lewis

This week saw the start of the school holidays for some and the anticipation of the holidays to come for others. John Lewis finished the week at 2.1% up on last year, with Online leading the way at 9.2% up year-on-year. The start of the week was strong, with a slight dip midweek due to being up against colder weather sales last year.

In John Lewis shops, there were some solid performances from across the country with Sheffield finishing the week as the top performing branch, up 8.8% year-on-year, then Ipswich, up 6.2% year-on-year, Milton Keynes up 5.4%, Swindon up 1.2% and Nottingham up 0.9%.

Online sales against last year were strong across all of the Home areas with Furniture leading the way at 24.7% up.

At the directorate level, Home came in at 5% up with Furniture leading the way at 7.6% up and Beds and Bedroom, Living, Dining and Upholstery all achieving double percentage increases as customers begin to prepare for winter comfort.

The Oxford Street Home department refurbishment has meant the branch has seen an increase in sales from the newly opened areas.

As the school holidays end people start to think about the winter and Christmas to come, and John Lewis is well placed with our shops and online having a real feel of Christmas about them.
