Sustainable workplace design in the spotlight

The fourth edition of the Sustainable Design Forum will be held on Thursday 23rd April at Crypt on the Green in Clerkenwell. Building on the success of the previous events, the forum is curated and hosted by the Sustainable Design Collective, a voluntary group of architects, designers and specifiers working within the workplace design community.

As well as furniture and fabric brands such as Humanscale, Boss, Modus, The Furniture Practice, Tsunami Axis, Crown Workspace and Gabriel participating in the event, SDC is inviting designers from throughout the sector to join in the conversation.

The Sustainable Design Forum says it aims "to provide a platform for all members of the workplace community, including manufacturers and suppliers, to hold meaningful, interactive discussions. The focus is on collaboration and learning – understanding the barriers and opportunities for greater sustainability".

This year, the event will again include the popular ‘speed dating’ tables. Each table is allocated a particular discussion around ‘People and Planet’ and chaired by an SDC member. Attendees are invited to join a table for 30 minutes before rotating to an alternative subject.

There will also be a strong focus on interactive workshops – an opportunity for the audience to participate with the themed topics including: ‘Materiality and impacts on human health’ by Humanscale; ‘Maximising product lifecycles’ by Crown Workspace; and ‘Understanding global supply chains’ by Future Works, a division of The Furniture Practice.

New initiatives at this year’s forum will also include: A Masters in Sustainability in 30 minutes – Dr Asif Din, supported by SDC members, will answer quick-fire questions from the audience; a panel discussion exploring the role of AI in facilitating greater circularity; and WOD (Women in Office Design) will host a tour for young designers to meet participating suppliers and manufacturers.

A&D practices will again showcase their own commitments to sustainability through practical project examples, and be joined by industry associations, including Interior Design Declares.

Formed in 2022 by Harsha Kotak and Joanna Knight, SDC includes over 30 members from A&D practices and specifiers within the workplace sector.
