Industry association offers recorded training on key topics

The Furniture Industry Research Association has begun to release its latest project, a series of five recorded training sessions to help members navigate regulations, directives and standards.

The first session, entitled Introduction to Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulations, is now available - with further sessions to be released on a weekly basis.

The Introduction to REACH Regulations session was developed by Bruce Lovell, consultant at FIRA International (the service provider to the research association). Spanning 30 minutes, the session includes an introduction to REACH, pre-registration and company obligations, the Candidate List and Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC), notification of Substances in Articles and Article Producers, the process required to limit or ban a substance, banned and restricted substance lists, and finally practical advice on chemical risk assessment.

Bruce says: “When I was initially approached by the research association to deliver recorded training, the REACH Regulations seemed like an obvious starting point. REACH is applicable to all components and articles in the consumer market, and heavily affects manufacturers and importers within the furniture industry.

“It’s a criminal offence to fail to comply with most duties under REACH and HSE enforcements do take place, with unlimited fines and/or up to two years' imprisonment for breaches. The thought behind this recorded training session is to give members of the research association a high-level overview of REACH so they can understand where their responsibilities lay.”

Further recorded training topics to be released by the Furniture Industry Research Association over the coming weeks include: Introduction to Biocidal Products Regulations; Introduction to European Union Timber Regulations; Introduction to the domestic flammability regulations; and Introduction to the contract flammability regulations.

The Introduction to REACH Regulations session is available to members of the Furniture Industry Research Association here.
