Cane specialist marks centenary

Cane and wickerware specialist Desser is celebrating its centenary this year with a series of special events and promotions.

The family-owned and run firm – now in its fourth generation – was founded in Manchester in 1919, and has since grown to become a leading UK supplier of rattan, wicker and cane conservatory furniture.

“One hundred years of continuous trading is a remarkable milestone for any business, particularly in today’s harsh economic climate, and it’s an achievement of which we are very proud,” says sales director Mark Stewart. “During the year we are celebrating the centenary with our many customers throughout the UK with prize competitions, give-aways, fun days and celebrity events in various locations.

“We will also be active raising money for our chosen charity, the Christie Hospital in Withington, Manchester, which carries out amazing cancer treatment and research and is especially close to our hearts.”

The company can trace its roots back to the First World War, when young Isaac Desser was serving with the British troops on the frontline in Belgium where he came into contact with Flemish craftsmen who were making baskets. Upon his return home to Manchester after the war, Isaac started to import these baskets and sell them to market traders in the local area.

Today, the company is based in a purpose-built warehouse and showroom in Cheetham.

“We have always been passionate about quality, sustainability, service and style,” adds Mark. “Our long trading history has given us a wealth of experience and made us true experts in the industry. Achieving our centenary as a sustainable British manufacturer is testament to the company’s success, and we now look forward to the future with a continued commitment to providing customers with the very best contemporary cane furniture available in the UK.”
