Carpetright's gender pay gap below national average

Carpetright has announced a gender pay gap well below the UK national average, and the average for the retail industry. The report, which has been published in line with the new Government legislation, has seen Carpetright announce a +8.1% mean and +6.5% median pay gap – the national and retail averages are +17.4% mean, +18.4% median, and +16.4% mean and +9.3% median respectively.

A mean gender pay gap of +8.1% broadly means that men are earning more than women at Carpetright, and this is explained by a few key factors, according to the retailer – having significantly more male than female colleagues overall, having fewer females at the most senior level, and a larger proportion of female colleagues choosing to work part time.

The bonus pay gap is significantly higher, at +40.7% mean and +47.3% median. These calculations are based not only on typical bonus payments, but include commission payments, monthly store bonuses and annual bonuses.

Commission is the biggest factor in Carpetright's higher bonus gap – whilst every store colleague is entitled to the same level of commission, the amount they earn will vary depending on individual performance and hours worked. With 35% of female colleagues working part time, it follows that women are earning less in total commissions. 92% of male colleagues received a bonus, compared to 89% of female colleagues – however, 100% of colleagues had the opportunity to earn bonus or commission.

Wilf Walsh, Carpetright CEO, says: “We take equality seriously at Carpetright and are pleased to report gender pay gap figures which are well-below the national and retail average. With a historically male-dominated business, gender is a real focus for us and we’re working hard to attract more female colleagues into the company. Additionally, we are confident we have no issues of equal pay, and we are focused on reducing the gap further.”
