BFM works to support people with disabilities in the furniture sector

The British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) is taking a new initiative to help small- and medium-sized furniture businesses employ people with disabilities.

SupportAbility is a follow up of the Working Tri-21 project which developed courses to support disabled individuals for roles within the sector. The aim now is to address issues that currently stop SMEs employing people suffering from physical disability, learning difficulties and those with a history of mental illness and encourage further employment.

The BFM is part of a consortium analysing gaps in current provision and due to report on their findings by the end of April 2017. The core aim is to provide the furniture sector with the resources to ensure people with disabilities can secure long term employment in the industry.

MD Jackie Bazeley says: "We are now pleased to announce that, again with EU partners, we are involved in SupportAbility a ‘follow- up' project funded by Erasmus+ and focussed on supporting companies in employing disabled individuals."
