Talks programme unveiled for Clerkenwell Design Week

An event at the forefront of design and architecture, Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) gathers the industries’ leading minds together to share knowledge and debate design’s hottest topics in a series of talks and seminars, which have been recently announced. CDW will present a wide selection of talks over the three-day event, with speakers including Tom Dyckhoff, Erwan Bouroullec, Patricia Urquiola, Pearson Lloyd, Ab Rogers and Lady Frances Sorrell.

Tuesday 21st May

Role reversal: Does a new type of workplace need a new type of design process?

2:30pm, The Farmiloe Building, 34 St John Street, London EC1M 4AY

Renowned design journalist Kerstin Zumstein will chair an insightful talk on the future of workplace design, featuring architectural designer Linda Morey Smith, creative director at BDG Architecture, Colin MacGadie, and a representative from global design firm RTKL. Investigating ‘The Third Place’ – a social environment somewhere in between the home and the workplace – the talk will address the demise of the desk in the face of mobile technology.

Workstation: Q&A with industrial facility co-founder – and Herman Miller designer – Kim Colin and Professor Jeremy Myerson of the Royal College of Arts

4:00pm, Workstation, 28 St. John's Lane, London, EC1M 4BU

This Q&A at Workstation’s new Clerkenwell showroom will be focused on the future of the design industry and new ways of working, followed by drinks and canapés and an invitation to use the showroom’s #DesignTheFuture booth.
Guests will be the first to give a 30 second video cast, describing where they think the working day will be conducted in the future. The best idea will be judged by the speakers and Workstation MD Nigel Symonds, with the winner receiving a Herman Miller chair.

Waterworlds

Talks with 100% Design will debut its first May programme at Clerkenwell Design Week, with an architecturally-focused panel discussion chaired by prominent critic and broadcaster Tom Dyckhoff. Waterworlds will bring together the Dean of Architecture at the RCA, Alex de Rijke, Architecture Foundation director, Sarah Ichioka, and Duggan Morris Architects to explore its work on projects involving construction and habitation on water.

Wednesday 22nd May

The importance of interior design in building a brand, with Shaun Clarkson

Leading hospitality designer Shaun Clarkson – whose clients include Harvey Nichols, Pernod Ricard, Vince Power and Oliver Peyton – will talk about the importance of interior and architectural design in building a brand, including positively impacting the bottom line and the secret to his success. The event will be hosted by Creativepool, a leading online network for creative professionals.

PearsonLloyd launch designs for Bene

4:00pm, Bene, 47-53 St John Street, London EC1M 4AN

Designer Tom Lloyd of PearsonLloyd will present the newly-launched RIYA and BAY chairs in a presentation at Bene’s Clerkenwell showroom. RIYA is a new office chair with striking rounded shapes, as well as clear and simply-designed control elements. The BAY chair is a hybrid between a task chair and a more informal meeting-cum-collaboration style of seating.

In Conversation With Erwan Bouroullec and Christopher Turner

6:30pm, Vitra 30 Clerkenwell Road, London EC1M 5PG

Talks with 100% Design presents In Conversation With, hosted at Vitra's Clerkenwell Road showroom, and will see prolific French designer Erwan Bouroullec and Icon Magazine editor Christopher Turner discuss how design has influenced and shaped the changing nature of the workplace.

Thursday 23rd May

Design For Good

Katie Treggiden, founder of award-winning design blog Confessions of a Design Geek, chairs this discussion about design and how it can be used and inspired by good. Treggiden talks to Thore and Garbers, the architects behind Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres, and Mini Moderns who have pioneered a system for recycled paint. They will be joined by Chloe Meineck, creator of the memory box for people with dementia, and Chris Griffin of Pi Global and founder of The Museum of Brands.

What's the Future of Social Housing?

4:00pm, The Farmiloe Building, 34 St John Street, London EC1M 4AY

Sam Jacob, co-founder of Fashion Architecture Taste, talks to architect Paul Karakusevic, founder of Love London Council Housing blog, Andrea Klettner, and Alex Morton from The Policy Exchange. Together they will address the future of social housing, and its social and architectural impact.

The Future of Design in Education

Onoffice editor James McLachlan will join Lady Frances Sorrell of the Sorrell Foundation, London Designer Ab Rogers and Richard Green, CEO of the Design and Technology Association. The panel will discuss the future of design in education, which has recently been destabilised by proposed reforms to the curriculum. The talk accompanies The Making Designers exhibition at the SCIN Gallery, exploring the schoolwork of well-known designers, including Nigel Coates, Michael Marriott, Linda Morey-Smith, Matthew Hilton, Tom Lloyd, Simon Pengelly, Ab Rogers and Terence Woodgate.

Carmody Groarke at the Contemporary Art Society

6:30pm, Contemporary Art Society, 59 Central Street, London EC1V 3AF

Carmody Groarke is to speak at Contemporary Art Society, outlining its design for the society’s new location, which opened in October. In addition to accommodating its offices, the newly-designed premises provides the first publicly-accessible platform in London for the Contemporary Art Society in its 100-year history, making a new hub for artists, curators, collectors and arts professionals.
