New Designers announces talks and events programme

New Designers 2013 has announced an extensive programme of talks and events for the 28th edition of the show. The events programme has something for everyone who wants to keep up with the latest trends, whether they just have an interest in design, are looking to start a business, or already work in the industry.

Taking place over two weeks, New Designers offers the chance to see and buy work from over 3000 emerging designers from a host of creative disciplines. The talks and events programme allows visitors to explore the design world through industry leaders and experts who will give talks and tours around the show.

The programme kicks off with The Design Trust, who are running a start-up day on Thursday 27 June geared towards those looking to start, run or grow a craft or design business. Topics such as financial management, online marketing and finding a studio space will be covered by over 25 professional advisers and organisations including Etsy, Samata Angel and Ideas Tap.

The following Thursday, 4 July, sees the Design Council and Creative and Cultural Skills Network collaborate on a day of talks focusing on design education and working in design in the cultural, public and commercial sectors. Sessions and contributors include Seymourpowell, Clayground Collective and Pecha Kucha style sessions.

For those who want to snap up the latest design trends, experts from The Design Museum and Trend Bible will be running tours of the show, and V&A co-curator Laurie Britton Newell will be speaking about the museum’s upcoming Memory Palace exhibition.

Other contributors to the talks programme include Bishopsland, Hallmark Creative, Craft Central, Arts Thread, Association of Illustrators and the newly opened Goldsmiths’ Centre.

Two Thursday Late sessions, see the show remain open in the evening until 8pm, with special events for visitors.

ABSOLUT Vodka hosts the show’s first Thursday Late session on 27 June, with a curated panel discussion featuring industry heavyweights. Stuart Wood of Heatherwick Studio, D&AD President Neville Brody and textile designer Kitty Joseph will discuss ABSOLUT Icon: What Makes Iconic Design. Creative designer cocktails will be served and the shortlisted entries for ABSOLUT’s bottle design competition will be on display.

Thursday Late in Part 2, 4 July, sees the Design Council collaborating with New Designers to launch its inaugural Future Pioneers Discovered at New Designers initiative. Having selected a shortlist of visionary young designers from Part 2 of the show during the day, the Design Council will announce its winning Future Pioneers at this Thursday Late event.

All talks, tours and events are free to attend with a New Designers invitation or a valid ticket. Spaces are limited at some events, so please book places online to avoid disappointment. Tickets for New Designers 2013 are on sale now the New Designers website.
