Angora goats help Harrison Spinks to become leader in sustainability

One of Great Britain’s most established and innovative bed makers, Harrison Spinks, has demonstrated its commitment to becoming world leaders in sustainable mattress and comfort innovation by introducing a new herd of goats on its 300-acre farm in Yorkshire.

Harrison Spinks’ new Angora goats will contribute to the bed maker’s in-house production of mohair – a sumptuous natural material that is used in some of its most luxurious mattresses. The introduction of this new breed of goat on its farm comes as part of Harrison Spinks’ recent £9m investment to grow the business in order to offer consumers the most luxurious, comfortable and sustainable beds on the market.

The Angora goats join Harrison Spinks’ existing flock of more than 600 Texel, Suffolk, Zwartble and Wensleydale sheep and alpacas, all of which are reared for their wool. These natural materials perfectly complement the innovative spring technology that is used across Harrison Spinks’ mattress ranges, creating the ultimate in sleeping environments.

The fleece from the Angora goat is both durable and resilient, and is used as a filling to enhance these qualities in Harrison Spinks’ luxury mattresses. Much like fleece from sheep, it is superb for regulating body temperature, but is softer and has a more luxurious feel. By using it as a mattress filling, Harrison Spinks is demonstrating its dedication to incorporating unique blends of natural, sustainable materials into each of its mattresses.

Simon Spinks, MD of Harrison Spinks, says: “One of the key aims of our five-year strategy is to increase the amount of natural materials we grow. The introduction of the Angora goats will allow us to produce some of the mohair we use in our mattresses ourselves on our own farm, as well as continuing to source additional material from other local farms in order to meet demand.

“Our team has been working hard to develop a bed that contains no foam, chemicals or glue, and the new Angora goats will take us a step closer to revolutionising the bed industry with the ultimate natural bed.”

Leeds-based Harrison Spinks, which manufactures beds under the Harrison, Somnus and Spink & Edgar brands, is one of the only bed manufacturers in the world to own its own farm and grow natural fillings for its mattress collections.
