Harveys donates upholstery to flood victims

Retailer Harveys has come to the aid of victims of the recent floods across northern Britain, pledging to donate £53,541 worth of upholstery items.

The retailer has selected to work with the local charity Community Furniture Store. Recommended by York County Council, The York and Selby Community Furniture Stores are at the forefront of the relief work for the Christmas floods. With delivery of all items confirmed for the week commencing 20th January, the charity will work as a donation point for providing this much-needed furniture directly to those affected.

Iolanda Cuomo, head of marketing at Harveys, comments: “The country was left truly devastated by the awful flooding that hit the nation and the homes of so many. Harveys has a network of stores, staff and customers that spans the entirety of the UK, and it is these communities and their wellbeing that is truly at the heart of our brand. We are honoured to be able to contribute towards this worthy cause and by donating furniture to the victims, we hope this goes some way to helping them to repair their homes and their lives.”

Ruth Batty, chief officer at the York and Selby Community Furniture Stores, adds: “On average, people are expecting to be in temporary housing for up to 12 months – some are remaining in damp homes, mainly because they do not have insurance or prefer staying because they are ill or elderly.

"I would like to thank Harveys so very much for the kind support they have given. We are grateful for all secondhand furniture – however, Harveys' donation will support our aim to help vulnerable people create welcoming homes that they can be proud of. Having a comfortable new sofa will be a boost for many of them at this traumatic time.

"The sofas themselves are being stored in warehouses near to the York store, one of which is being converted into a showroom. This means the flooded residents can then personally choose the sofa they prefer, which is also an incredibly important factor.”
